I discovered something this year that I should have known for many years by now. IT seemed so simple that I felt foolish for not recognizing it sooner and having saved a lot of money.

You can love a gun design and not have to won it. You can enjoy it just the same without having it in the safe.

For me, there are 3-4 of these guns. They appeal to me deeply, either through sentiment or cool factor, or for no reason that I can explain.

The first of these is the Benelli M1 Super 90 (and equally the Mossberg 590). I love the Benelli. I love the weight, the balance, the quickness of it. The reliability of it. It looks cool and is pretty much the MP5 of shotguns. The first one I owned was attained in trade for a Sig P228, and I've owned and sold 3 or 4 since that first one. I may just own another Benelli, but I don't really have a use for a shotgun, least of all a combat shotgun.

Second for me is the USP Tactical/Expert 45. I got a deal on an expert a few years ago, but one mag through it and ended up selling it for much more than I paid for it. It left some sellers remorse, so it wasn't long that I tried to replace it with a USP Tactical. The Tactical just wasn't as good trigger wise, and I sold it too. I really like the was those guns feel, like nothing else, but I don't really care for handguns. I own them because they can be concealed easier than a rifle.

Next for me is the Steyr SSG 69 (P1). Every time I see or think of them, I remember Magnum PI dressed in real VN tiger stripe, hiding in the bushes scoping the VN general dude with his SSG. I wanted one then and there. I have mostly resolved to let it be a want. I don't know that owning it will satisfy the want, since I don't have Thomas Magnums mustache, Tigerstripe or Ferrari 308.

There are a handful of other guns I like that just don't do it for me when I own them, so it was easier to not have them, but these three haunt me like a just quit smoker seeing someone take a long drag off of a Marlboro.

Is it just me?

M1A awesome rifle, but for some reason I’m not scrambling to buy one.

Also, any surplus rifle. Super cool, and would love to own them but when I have money burning in my pocket I don’t really consider going out to buy one.

Yup. I've owned two. First was a USMC built match rifle in an early Macmillan smear camo stock, unitizes gas system, welded rear lug, the whole shebang. some 2112's ID'd the rifle and could tell me intimate details about it. I bought it for a grand, and sold it a bit later to a guy that had shot on the USMC shooting team in the late 80's.

The other was a SA receiver with all USGI parts and a SAK (Saco-Lowell) barrel. I bought he barreled receiver from a friend and completed the rifle with all USGI parts, then sold it for what I had in it.

50BMG is another. If I lived out west where I could stretch one out, it'd be different but with 100 yards ranges hard to find, it doesn't make much sense in GA.

Smith & Wesson .500 magnum. Hell of a gun. I've shot one and it has has a ton of "cool" factor. But I have absolutely no use or need for one.
