without reading every post, I think it would be bad for the gun community. I also think Obama could use that as an excuse to declare Martial Law due to "armed, civil unrest" in capital cities

You sir are welcome to your opinion as well. Put your gun in one of those cheap holsters and open carry when you don't know me from jack. I will assure you that it will be mine if I want it.

Don't try and twist my words open carry IS STUPID.

Why? Because you have advertised to any potential threat who and what you are and what you have. Now if I am a bad guy I know it and unless you have eyes in the back of your head or 360 degree vision or never leave the confines of your property you will at some time be at a disadvantage and the criminal will strike.

I've seen it happen to cops in uniform. If they are that brazen what do you think they think of you?

You do have a valid point, when you open carry you are advertising the fact that you are armed to the whole world and you lose the advantage of surprise. But open carry does have its benefits, and I open carry on occasion. For one thing, it allows the general public to see that other citizens are armed and are carrying responsibly. When I open carry I make a point to be very well dressed and I am always extra polite and friendly to people. The worst possible thing you can do is to open carry and act like an ass to people. So if some unknowing stranger says something like "Why do you have a gun?" the worst thing you can say is "Its my right and its none of your business!" Not only does that just make you look like an a$$hole but it makes everyone else who carries look like an a$$hole too. So instead, just smile and say "Its ok, I have a permit to carry this weapon and open carry is legal in the State of Georgia." Then the other guy will think "Well he does have a gun but hes a nice guy, maybe other people with guns are nice guys too."

When you open carry you have an obligation to educate the public as much as you have an obligation to defend yourself. I have never had a negative experience while OC-ing. I've actually been approached by strangers on several occasions when I am out in public and they have thanked me for carrying a weapon openly because they said they felt safer knowing that I was around. Now OC-ing certainly doesn't mean that you are some kind of superhero but in my experience the general public is much more supportive of it than you may think.

No matter what you do, do it responsibly with the right equipment. You also have a very good point about the cheap holsters. If you are going to OC, do it with some kind of retention holster. The fobus holsters are NOT designed for OC and like you said, I could snatch it away from you in a heartbeat if I really wanted to.
