Has anyone ever washed their guns?

I'm watching a review video on a Vortex optic and the guy washed his AR. Not making fun of him, just curious if this is a somewhat normal thing. I've never seen or heard anyone do this before.

The bath starts at 12:00:

Lots of M16s and M4s went into the showers during basic, but I never heard of dunking a scope.

Scope is trashed.

I do that to all my guns I've had on the table at the gunshow. You never know where some folks' booger hooks have been.

LOL! Guns are tools. Do you wash your hammer too? I've only ever just cleaned them with the basic Hoppes 9 solvent and lube.

Hoppes 9 will destroy a nickel finish, soap and water will not.

Showers in Boot Camp...And in every deep water crossing we had to make. No soap though... No scope either...

I've washed ammo in the washing machine. I wash blackpowder gun barrels with dish soap and boiling water.

havent but jsut because it seems like a waste of oil to wash it all off to me, but i cant see any real problems this would casue as long as you oiled it up well afterwards. lots of optics are "waterproof" now and i would suspect a quick rinse wouldnt hurt a decent optic
