Saw these in an old episode of Hawaii 5-0 from 1972. Three of them were used to "make a hit" on a mob boss.

I assume the purpose was to catch the the empty cases.

Nope. Seems like a good way to get a jam. I have seen an extra slide lock on a “hush puppy” that keeps the slide from opening. Very quiet but obviously makes the gun single shot
In the show, only one round was fired from each pistol.

The mob boss got hit with three 380 rds...they called them "9mm short".

That's the English translation of 9mm Kurz, Corto or Dutch "Court." Not the same as 380 ACP although you can get away with shooting them in a .380 pistol.

Bullseye shooters use a similar concept to catch brass but it's normally made from hardware cloth on a heavy wire frame.
