the Berthier looks about right if im looking at the right pics

Naw barrel band covers the top handgaurd on the bethier rifles.
OP's handgaurd lookes like it had bands. See that ledge where it would rest?
Right here.. Looks like band marks to me but I'm about as right as a broke clock, Only right twice a day
Yeah I do see that but there is no relief cut in the wood so the irons would be usable.
I don't think it's a Berthier, carbine or rifle. I've had the rifle before, not the carbine.
The recess on the large end is cut out for fitting over a round receiver (I guess). It's not set up to go into a band or receiver ring such as you'd find on a Model of 1917.
The small end seems to have been under a ring and even where the presumed sight relief cut is located.
