I found an old .32 cal S&W while going through my grandfathers things after he passed. Would really like to get an idea of what this thing is valued at?

I found his “original gun toters license”, issued back in the 1940’s and the serial number matches on the grip of the gun.

Help?

Looks like a S&W .32 Top Break with Mother of Pearl grip

Worth about $100 in poor condition. Around $1000 in pristine condition

So...the government collected a tax from this gentleman, way back in 1946, for him to be able to legally exercise a previously granted freedom that was given to him by our founding fathers.
Imagine that.....
I think we all as firearm enthusiasts are constantly in search of that extra bit of historical connection that is sometimes found along with items like this. Hell, I get excited over just an original sales receipt in a blue box from the 1980s.
Great find,Sir. And thanks for sharing that with us.

I don't claim to be an expert but have a few of these. Mostly because they are cheap, and contrary to internet wisdom, quite shootable in reasonable condition.

Real World, $200 -$400 as always depending on condition,. That;s in above average condition, I'd say $300 with the document.

At the time, one could open carry without a permit. At an early date, the Georgia Supreme Court recognized the right of citizens to go armed in public. There actually is language in some early decisions that honorable men carried openly to show that they were prepared to defend their honor, and t was cowardly to carry a concealed weapon.
