Help Identifying Wood, Trying to Match

Birch is a very tight grained wood and does not take stain like that.

I don’t have any pictures handy but white and yellow birch have been used in plywood veneers and flush commercial doors for many years and takes stain just like that. That does not however mean that definitely is a birch slab, in the picture. Impossible to tell from a picture. But since it is in a metal frame it is safe to assume it may be one of the most common species used in commercial doors.
 
I love buying a solid core door at Lowes or Home Depot with a nice veneer if it's damaged, say dropped on a corner. They'll sell those things cheap to git shed of them. Rip the damaged end and tack some moulding around the edge and you have a fantastic workbench top.
I always go to the back and get counter tops that people ordered and get a nice one cheap
