I sent my Saiga to a gunsmith for conversion. He came highly recommended and did excellent work. BUT!! He doesn't remember how he threaded my barrel. No way! Way. So here I am.

So I bought a thread gauge and a caliper. But I am not getting the hang of the caliper. Attached are some photos. Any ideas as to what I have or how I should correctly use the caliper are still sincerely appreciated.

Thank you

Frank

Its a 7.62 x 39. I will retry the calipers the correct way. I asked the gunsmith if its a 14 x1 and he said that he did not think so, but he cant remember. Argh. He just did the gun. I paid him what he wanted, said to let me know if he needs more and did not press him on turn around time. I was not a difficult customer, but this appears personal.

Who was the gunsmith?
Siagas are meant to use a '74 style FSb with 24mmRH threads. The FSB journal is too long to use an AKM FSB.

Its 14x1LH you need to zero your calipers before you try and gauge something with them

It's a gunsmith in Oregon recommended to me by someone who works in a very popular LGS. The gunsmith did 3 or 4 AK Conversions for him and he was very happy. Needless to say I am stunned that the gunsmith shipped back the gun and does not remember how he thread the barrel. Tonight I will use the calipers correctly and post up the photos. I stopped by Home Depot today to try and buy some 24 thread nuts, but they don't come large enough. What an unnecessary hassle.

It would be even more difficult to understand if he didn't thread his AKs LH14mmx1. But what do I know.

Norinco 84s is 14-1 LH threads... I wager it fits your new Saiga.

Your 107 FR is not a option, for sure is too big.

Your other Saiga "might" work, but I can see it's some AK74 hybrid muzzle device and only God knows what thread pitch is under there.

Remember on your 84s... press and hold in the detent and turn the birdcage RIGHT to unscrew, then to attach to your Saiga: gently turn LEFT.

So thats the 84s secret? I tried to take it off and it has some play. I could not muscle it off with a pair of vice grip pliers, and I am not a weak guy. The old "detent" trick. I dont know how I made 53 years without poking an eye out.

Next headache. Deciphering a MAK90 thread. The 84s does not fit. Neither do either of my pistons. The threads are so fine, too fine?
