Help me out here

How much gas you get in your face is is going to vary depending on your setup. If you are going for quiet for home defense I'd move to 300 blackout. It's going to be expensive to shoot on the range but will excel at being quiet.

If you are not so much concerned with the quiet, 5.56 is fine. I have had very good luck swapping to the vltor A5 recoil system on everything except a piston gun. How much gas you get back depends on your suppressor bore, gas port size, and buffer weight. There is no secret formula as all guns run different so it's trial and error.

In the $1000 range I'd be looking to build with quality where it counts, the barrel and the bolt carrier group.
