Help with a tight slide

There is a thread over on the Smith and Wesson Forum talking about the stiff recoil springs in the 9 and 40 Shield. Grown men having the same issue as you. Most relate that after 300 to 400 rounds down the pipe, racking and releasing the slide gets a little easier.

Thanks CQB27! I'll go check out the thread...and maybe find a range that doesn't flood.

This the technique I generally teach with pretty good success. (to folks that lack the natural strength)

Good luck.

While the "slingshot" technique works, like F.H. when teaching as well as for personal use, I also prefer/ recommend the "over the top" method as I've seen it work more consistently after long range days or under even adverse conditions.
Also as the video alludes to, it allows better use of isometric tension (push/pull) & allows more grip surface area by using more skin to slide contact.

Another recommendation (along with breaking it in through shooting) that often helps for guns w/ stiff recoil springs is to leave the slide locked back overnight several evenings to compress the spring & cause it to weaken or "take a set" just a bit to lighten it.

My 9mm Shield is pretty tight. I've only put bout 25 rounds through it. I believe it's just a tight factory recoil spring. I compared it to my Gen 4 G21, and it's definitely much tighter. Other than rounds through it, only thing I could reccomend is racking it numerous times.

Beat me to it- that's the best advice I've got. However it's always a good idea to work it back and forth (this is going the wrong direction fast) until you're used to the motion and cycle the spring to loosen it up.
