I've got a few full size tomato plants growing on the deck this year, along with the cherry tomatoes and peppers I usually grow. This is the first time I tried growing full sized (determinant) tomatoes and they were doing well until a few weeks ago.

As they start to ripen they start splitting (see pic). It doesn't seem to be bug related, just this cracking around the stem. Is this normal for full sized tomatoes? I don't see it with the variety of cherry tomatoes I've grown.

I’d always heard it’s from a large rain causing the fruit to swell too fast and spit. A few years ago someone told me it was caused by the rain rapidly cooling the skin causing it to shrink and crack. I’m not sure what’s the truth. I started to lean towards the latter. I’ve never had tomatoes split from my drip irrigation that I know of but they have definitely split from rain.

That makes sense and it fits with the recent rainy weather we've had...

EDIT: I'm also using a drip system.
