My sister kept noticing a dirt streak coming down some siding when it rains. When I went to check the gutter I noticed the gutter guard had been cut open and then had a screen placed where the hole was made, so I'm guessing the previous owners had the same/similar issue.

It looks to me like the cut siding contacting the shingles would soak up water, and then basically found a channel from the roof down to inside the little walk way. Some of the pics show where I cut out the siding. It has flashing and only the siding is rotten, no structural damage. I also pulled out a LOT of caulking, which again leads me to believe this was a previous issue and probably a quick fix before the house was sold.

So what do I need to do? Like I said there is flashing which helped prevent water coming into the wall but a good amount of siding is bad. I'd obviously like to reside it it to where this doesn't happen again. It's not like there is a huge amount of water on this section, I mean it's growing moss for Pete's sake. Do I just not put the new siding up so close to the shingling? Got to be more to it than that.

Thanks.

Siding should stay a half inch or so off the shingles. But it looks like that lowest piece of step flashing is no good. Looks like it’s running water past the end of the gutter down the siding. Causing exactly the damage you’re seeing. Could also cause soffit damage below.

Probably need to take that lower corner (gutter cover/gutter to siding… ) apart and fix it.

Probably install a $.75 piece of flashing to fix your problem.

I’m pretty sure the only way to fix it is flashing or installing a diverted bar
Well I've thought about flashing over the top of where they meet, but surely that s not really the preferred method?

I mean aesthetically that's not the norm. Lord I don't want to have to do that in other places if they are suffering the same issue, let alone I'm sure my sister won't want to see flashing all over the place? I will check into some of those darker diverter bars though, they wouldn't be too noticable in this area.

The step flashing coming down the wall where the shingles join the wall, should be behind the siding, and out on top of the first layer of shingle. It looks like, but you cannot tell from your pictures, the upper flashing may be OK, but the last piece here in red definitely does not look OK.

Flashing should run out on top of a piece of siding. It looks like yours doesn't which means the water runs out behind your siding. Also make sure there is an end cap on the gutter where it meets the siding. If there's not 1 then your gutter is also dumping water behind the siding.

I see what your saying about it running the water the way it is. That makes sense considering how far it's running.

But if I end the flashing sooner do I then need to turn it out some towards gutter? Otherwise wouldn't there still be possibility of damage to new siding?

Agreed. I couldn’t see if there is an end cap on that gutter either. You also need to check the sealant at the endcap. The endcap is basically waterproofed with a gutter specific sealer. Any of that leaking would cause you problems. But it looks like your problem is a little higher up. Step flashing does not have to be visible.
