Here we go: 9mm vs. .45 ACP

What it comes down to for me is the cost of practice. I can get a 50 rd box of federal for $9.50 in 9mm, and $16.50 for .45. Shoot a couple hundred rounds it adds up.

Yep, I love shooting 9 because of the cost... 40 isn't too bad but it's hard to find under 14 bucks or so. I think 16.50 for .45 is pretty awesome man... let me know where you found that price! I might need a few more boxes. Anyway, 9mm for range gun, 40 and 45 for self defense.

Anyone remember that scene from Brave Heart where William Wallace dares that Big friend of his to hit him with the large Rock and when he threw it he missed cause it was too heavy to throw... William Wallace then threw the little stone and hit the other guy right in the forehead. Bigger isn't always better. 9mm ammo is cheap and the bad guy only gets up in the movies. Die now or die later it certainly has a way of taking the fight out of someone and not making people happy.

I have always said "Your pistol is to only be used to fight your way back to the rifle you never should have laid down"

Or to save your butt when your rifle malfunctions or runs dry.

In this fight, I'll take the 9mm. I'd rather have too much ammo then not enough. I'd also like to be able to fire 18 rounds before reload.

How about a 9mm on steroids - 357 SIG

Between 9mm and .45, both are fine the way I see it. A lot of people believe the knock down power myth - bad guys deflect 9mm bullets but when they get hit a .45, they shriek and die instantly. Both have their place. As some have already said, 9mm is more universal. I also find it much easier to conceal a G26 than any subcompact .45 I've ever tried to. But if the world ends and my ammo stash dwindles down to just FMJ, i'd rather shoot .45 than 9mm.
