I'm pretty happy with an 870 for the limited purposes I own one. And it's been utterly reliable to this point. Being comfortable with, and having confidence in, a firearm has some value in spite of the points (and tone) of the quoted post. That said, I'm looking to get a semi-auto shotgun and, after I get comfortable with its function and reliability, I'll see what I think. To agree with the OP, however, I am not going to put pallets of ammo through a defensive shotgun like a competition shooter so I probably won't ever know how it performs (or fails) when pushed to the limit over an extended period.

P.S. - I'm continually impressed with the fluid definition of "Fudd" as used among firearms enthusiasts.
