High power FM CB radio

I ran a 10 meter Galaxy radio for years, with a Palomar 500 watt Linear and a 50 watt pre-amp. Had it tuned and aligned with echo and talkback and it worked flawlessly. There was quite a bit of traffic in the late 90's and early 2000's, with the linear/amp it was pretty easy to talk over folks..even though I tried not to. I miss having one, very handy when traffic starts to come to a creep you could find out what is going on, not to mention it was nice to break up the boredom on a long haul.

Question for our esteemed panel of experts....what kind of radio for someone who never knew much and has forgotten the little they did know?
I have a decent scanner and a SW receiver but I'm talking about being able to communicate in a grid down situation.
Keeping in mind that I'm a luddite who is still surprised every time I flip the switch a light comes on...use small words.

I have 6 of these and my kids know how to use them.

I agree with Granite 3. Baofeng for short range. Cheap enough to buy four or five. Program them for MURS, GMRS, and FRS frequencies.
