High power FM CB radio

I am a licensed Amateur Radio Operator. One of my radios has had the MARS modification (required as a MARS operator). It has a general coverage receiver (full HF bands) and with the MARS mod it will transmit on any frequency it can receive. It also puts out 100 watts when transmitting. I have talked on the CB freqs but have always kept the power down to 5 watts out. I would never transmit 100 watts on the CB freqs but it's interesting what you can do if you really want to disobey the laws.

I have a decent scanner and a SW receiver but I'm talking about being able to communicate in a grid down situation.
Keeping in mind that I'm a luddite who is still surprised every time I flip the switch a light comes on...use small words.
I agree with the others who have mentioned the Baofeng UV-5. They are cheap and they work, but just be aware. It is a HAM radio. Not a GMRS radio or an FRS radio service. They are far from "pick up and talk" and require a HAM license to operate...technically. They also are not FCC approved to operate on the GMRS band...technically.

For true "grid down" scenario, I'm currently looking into something called meshtastic. It's text only, no comms, but it functions without wifi, cell, or repeaters or towers.

100 watts? That's weak, man. Some of these guys are pushing 1,000. I routinely hear a guy DXing from Louisiana, another guy in Florida.

Not much action on CB these days; aside from the noise on CH6.
The Super Bowl is still very much a thing, but I find 19 to still be full of regular traffic. I was in Doraville the other day going to H Mart and there was a wreck on the top end of 285. I keyed up and asked what side of the road the wreck was on and immediately got a response. And from the amount of OTR guys I see in Love's with the headsets on, people are still using it. I was up in Chattsworth doing some lite offroading weekend before last and kinda did stare down the people who passed me. My CB immediately lit up with them cussing me out for staring them down. I also had a long conversation with a grain driver in South Dakota who was very surprised that anyone would have a CB in an RV. Obviously, your mileage may vary.
