Home defense... with a twist

A USGI .30 carbine is a good choice, if you get a reliable one.
I've seen a few that had jamming issues and needed tinkering or some parts replaced to run smoothly.
These guns are also highly collectible now and sell for about $1000 that may be an issue.

Option #6: What about a semi-auto .22 WMR rifle?
Rugers are rare and collectible now, but Remington model 597 came in a 22 Magnum version, and it was not expensive.
I think there should be some used ones still out there on the market.

Light gun, fast firing, and those 40 grain 22 Magnum hollow points or soft points will leave the barrel at about 2000 ft. per second.

Those new Inland .30 carbines have a terrible reputation. They're unreliable out of the box. Maybe after some gunsmithing, polishing, or a couple trips back to the factory under warranty you might get them running right.
Maybe they need a 500-round break-in period.
But out of the box they are nothing but trouble.

I agree granny should visit range to try several models
to determine which one SHE wants. Advice is good to
have but final choice should be hers.
Another easy to rack option is Sig P238.
Cheaper alternative is the Springfield 911.
