How do I date an old Marlin Shotgun?

My buddy gave me the serial # of an old Marlin pump shotgun. I tried to look on the Marlin site to find a mfg date but there doesnt appear to be a way to do it. Anyone know how to tell the date of mfg by the serial #? PMs would be appreciated.

Whatever the date be VERY careful. If it's the one I'm thinking about the can be dangerous. The bolt doesn't have much to keep it from coming back into your face. Can you post a foto?

Heard back from Marlin today. According to them it was made in 1896 making 114 yrs old. I don't have a pic. My buddy is debating buying it and we were trying to determine age. If he gets it, I'll be happy to post a pic.
