How did they ever let it get that close with out taking it under fire ? Someone is going to get fired for dereliction of duty ! Just lucky it didn’t blow up !

I wondered the same thing. Surely the carrier had escorts - destroyers, etc. on flanks to intercept such hazards.

Training run ? Maybe. In the Med, all the Russian fishing boats had about 20 antennae on them. Hiding in plain sight thing. lol I've been through the Suez several times, always a fun trip.

I was on the midshift in the control tower at NAS Cubi Point Philippines when the USS Kittyhawk hit the Russian sub K-314 in the Sea of Japan. They called an “Echo Item” and we immediately launched every F-14, A-6, A-7, P-3 and S-3 we had as did the Russians and it all nearly came to a head that night with everyone pissed off and converging on one spot.
