No return really needed but it helps.

I would. If you want the air to go in, it has to go out somewhere.

Now if it is open, the air should circulate.

you don't have to but it will help. Like stated above or leaving the door open or having a gap at the bottom. The whole circulation of air is what makes us comfy.
