.... a pistol upper and a rifle upper on the same lower. Just changing uppers & brace/stock. Is that right?

I don’t know how anyone would know.... say I purchased an AR pistol from a member that converted it from a rifle. Unless the gun was used in a crime and it came back as being “born” as a rifle. But I don’t think you can legally convert a lower that was born a rifle lower, into a pistol.

i think you can put a rifle upper on a pistol lower,as long as it never gets a butt stock. the lower was still a pistol...

a pistol has a barrel less than 16",but it does not have a max length to be a pistol...

the only way I know of if the lower is a multi lower then its considered to be legal.
As long as the lower was first assembled with a pistol upper it can be swapped back and forth as often as you like. A pistol can be changed to a rifle and back but if it was originally a rifle then it cannot be made a pistol.
just keep a registered SBR lower around...put w/e on it. it isn't a permanent change in barrel length.
Makes no difference what it says on the lower. It can be marked 5.56 and you can put a 7.62x39 upper on it if you want. Nothing illegal about it. Again if it starts out life as a pistol lower it can be swapped to rifle and back at will. If it starts out life as a rifle lower it must always remain a rifle lower.
