Do you naysayers realize all of the benefits we enjoy due to the technological advances made by the space program?

Space exploration is a win/win. We are laying the groundwork for realistic expansion into space by future generations while at the same time getting almost immediate benefit from the technologies developed by the space program.

Precisely. NASA R&D has advanced us so much in technology. My only issue is the wasteful spending. In the 1960s, an American company spent over $1 million to develop a pen that writes in space and sold it to NASA... Russia just used a pencil! We spend trillions on programs that end up being abandoned. If we spent more money and time on things here on Earth, this world would be better and we wouldn't need to find another planet to possibly live on.

Eventually the human race will have to leave Earth to survive and the amount being spent on space exploration is miniscule when compared to overall spending. We could spend the entire space budget on Earthly programs and it wouldn't make a noticeable difference.

That's a theory based on the wastefulness of humans. If we actually took care of the planet and stopped wasting resources, we wouldn't need another planet. That's proven in how other countries take care of their countries. There's dozens of countries that save trillions on waste by the type of recycling they have. Wouldn't need to survive on another planet if we took care of this one.

And that's not even remotely true. If you install solar panels and have a well for water, wouldn't it save you $$ on electricity and water? Of course it would. Apply that on a larger scale and it'll drastically reduce resource consumption and provide people with more capital, which influences the free market. There's a lot of ways to make life more sustainable here. If we spent the space budget on replenishing forests, wild life conservation, and optimizing resources usage then we absolutely could make a noticeable impact.

I'm not talking about us screwing the planet up. Sooner or later there will be an outside influence that we have no control over. There have been five mass extinction events on Earth. It will happen again.
