They don't need to dam up a pond, but they do eat trees. In a pond they usually nest along/in the banks instead of what you typically think of as a beaver dam.

If you catch them early in devouring a tree, you can wrap chicken wire around the tree and save it.

They eat the leaves and inner bark. They also cut down trees to wear their teeth down as their teeth never stop growing. The back side of their teeth wear first, leaving them like a chisel, well suited for cutting wood.

yup, he will be returning sooner than later. I'd also recommend wrapping in wire but that one is too far gone. I'd wrap any others that are close unless you want them to look like this
