So close. I guess one of his beavermates told him there's no need to dam up a pond lol...

They don't need to dam up a pond, but they do eat trees. In a pond they usually nest along/in the banks instead of what you typically think of as a beaver dam.

If you catch them early in devouring a tree, you can wrap chicken wire around the tree and save it.

Interesting. I had no idea they actually ate trees.
 
They eat the leaves and inner bark. They also cut down trees to wear their teeth down as their teeth never stop growing. The back side of their teeth wear first, leaving them like a chisel, well suited for cutting wood.
