IBEW Local 613

I'm not a big fan of unions, after seeing how the UAW works....my grandfather, dad, two uncles and several cousins were members. The Electrical Contractor my Father-in-law owns employs a lot of former IBEW guys who would rather work than stand on the corner and picket.....either way if you don't have a problem getting up and working you should be fine keeping a job, union or not.

When I started this thread i did not mean for it to become a **** storm for who supports unions versus who does not. I just wanted to reach out and see if there where any brothers on here. I apologize for starting this thread.

I wouldn't worry about it, it's really 6 of one and half a dozen of another when it comes to unions in Georgia. Other than the political arenas that most unions(not members) find themselves in, any company worth working for will have a attorney on retainer, safety regulations that meet and often exceed OSHA requirements and ensure more than fair wages.

LU 613 here as well. Did 19 years the 1st time and went to big power stuff. Hoping to back on with a good company to last me 20 more years.

My union helps me have a better environment to work in. Got rid of faulty safety equipment that we had, prevented an outside Chief with a horrible reputation from getting the job, and helped get us a bonus check for the first time in I don't know how long.

And I am backed by an Attorney if I ever need it for work related issues.

So my dues don't solely go to Political backing. Not what its about for me.

AMEN!

Unless you work for me I don't care whether you are union or not but it sounds more like more of an extortion scam than a brotherhood. My brother does not demand money from me and then hand it to my political opponents.

Captdave, I usually agree with a lot of your opinions/positions, and ALWAYS respect your right to express them, but I gotta' wonder...Have YOU ever WORKED in a Union Shop??? Please, do tell us, as we'd like to know where your opinion on Union "Brotherhood" originates....mikey357

I can't speak for Captdave but I'll relay my personal experiences.

I've been an electrician for almost 20 years now. I took and passed the Unrestricted Electrical Contractor's test the first time. I've done site lighting to Energy Management Sysyems, to Automated Controls, to installing a receptacle. I'll be the first one to tell you that no one knows everything there is to know about our trade.

I've been on job sites with union labor and with union electricians, the unmitigated arrogance, out and out sabotage, derisive comments and harrassment are just a start. We've had padlocks installed on doors to keep us out of rooms, material stolen, tools stolen, been told we had to leave the jobsite while they were on site, had union individuals follow us around taking pictures to trump up safety violation charges, the list goes on and on. It that's the type of Brotherhood you're proud of then you've lost my respect.

I work for a Merit Shop. That means if we perform we keep working. We're not protected by anything other than the labor laws of the State of Georgia. We don't tell new employees that they have to be part of our club and pay dues to keep our jobs. We don't force people that have been laid off to keep paying their dues else be threatened with legal action. And finally, we don't keep around dead weight because they have a shop steward and a union lawyer to protect them.

I don't have issues with people that work for union shops. I do have issues with people that work for union shops that practice the Chicago style labor tactics above. Please don't get me started on subsidized labor to underbid jobs either.
