That's definitely what it was.
My grandmother once told me the only thing better than one snake was two snakes .... she would generally make two snakes out of one snake with the closest shovel or hoe.
Red Bellied Water Snake! They do resemble Cotton Mouth except for the head. They can be pissy as mentioned above!
My best guess is a black rat snake aswell.

Sometimes it's too late, but in the future try to relocate him or get the dog away unless he looks like one o the 6 in the link.
We accidentally killed a 6' king last summer; it was in some steel we were moving, and we ran it off once, but didn't see it the second time until we already mashed it

I tried to catch a big king snake once and couldn't believe how strong that sucker was.
