I just finished putting together what I consider to be an ideal hunting rifle for GA deer and hogs. It's a Marlin XS7 .308 but I had the barrel cut to 18" (Randy Henson) and it wears a Redfield Revolution 2-7x33 scope. It's light and short and handles like a 30-30 and the scope allows quick close-in shots as well as long shots over clearcuts and such cranked up to 7x if need be.
Figure out what type of area your most likely to be hunting ie: heavy brush, light brush, open fields etc. and make your choice from there. I hunt with a .243 most of the time, and it's Dropped every Deer (Many) that I've shot at, in it's tracks. Same old saying goes Shot Placement Not Caliber makes the difference. Proper ammunition for whatever caliber you choose, is another big thing. In my opinion the Best most Universal Caliber out there is the 30-30. Great brush caliber and decient range. This same question has been asked a thousand times and you'll get the same answer everytime. Noboby agrees totally but a little research will show the 30-30 has probably taken more Game in North America then almost everything else added together.
