Idea for a hunting rifle

Another vote for .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm NATO) for all the reasons as described. I prefer a short action in my bolt guns anyhow.

I know they are not exactly the same and here is the link: http://www.303british.com/id36.html

If this makes the .308 ODT prices go up...... It's a crappy round and don't buy it!

Been around guns most my life and owned alot of guns but new to hunting what would be a overall good rifle for deere and hogs......maybe big game.. ?

I commented earlier, as did many other posters, many of whom were knowledgeable shooters and had excellent ideas of "The Best Firearm" .

Later, I remembered a fine pistol I had several years ago.

Yes, it was a Thompson Contender, in .30-30 caliber.

Pistol you say ?

Yes, it was amazingly accurate. With open sights, I could poke 'dime size' groups at 25 yards at Isaak Walton shooting range, from a leather bag rest. I was using 150 G. and 170 G. factory loads. ( Yes, I was younger then, and still had good vision ~ with corrective lenses. )

Practical ? You decide. As with most of the other folks on here, if it goes "BANG" and does the job, we can find 'Something' we like about it.

These are legal to use for Deer in my part of Indiana, only because they were in a pistol.

Indiana. Dead last in the Nation, and determined to stay that way.

Oh,

By the way.

I was in a big Gun Show, in Indianapolis several years ago, and noticed a woman carrying some guns for trading purposes.

As the crowd flowed in her direction, I noticed she had this overwhelming aroma of "Hoppes No. 9".

Damn ! This is most attractive feminine aroma that exists !

I was married at the time, and some HUGE ape about 6 foot 13 inches tall was hovering nearby and growling, so I headed the other way.

Otherwise ... who knows ...

4 inch Colt ?

Snubbie S & W ?

Ruger Plooger ?

Dare I say ~ Muzzle loader ?

KIMCHEE YOU CRASS ASS ! CAN'T YOU EVER GIVE IT A BREAK ?

Slap ! Slap !

Thanks. I needed that.

Are you drunk?

It is hard to beat the old 30-30 or 35 for shots under 125 yards and game no bigger than Whitetail deer. Any distance beyond that will require the likes of a 270 Winchester, 308 or 30-06. That is really all that you will ever need. The ballistics say it all on these 3 fine rounds and ammunition is readily available and much less expensive. . Anything more than this is over-kill 99% of the time and simple marketing. Good luck and safe hunting.

IMHO, when dealing with shots that are going to be within 150 yards 90-100% of the time, bringing up things like a flat trajectory or arguing for a round because it is 1-200FPS faster than another is pointless. 7mm mag vs 270win? Who cares.

What matters to me is first, how comfortable I am with that particular gun/ammo combination, and second, what the bullet I choose to use is going to look like after it hits 150lbs of furry meat.
