Ideas on where to place stands

Most of the overgrowth is just grass and in reality it is closer to three feet tall, with the occasional 6 footer. Those small pines are 8 foot or so. I half tempted to just run around the pasture in my truck and knock a bunch of the grass down.

Just be mindful of the catalytic converter and it's propensity to start grass fires if you let it idle. As me how I know. ;) Chain a couple old tires on behind you, and you're gtg.

Where are the food sources in the area? Find the game trails headed to the food sources, and setup at least 2 stands for wind direction.

You've got some time before the rut so if you can find the trails and setup some cameras on the them, you can find out when they are moving. My guess is with all those houses in the area, you have a lot of nocturnal activity with some movement right at sunup and sundown.

Not sure on food sources. I hope to find out a bit more while scouting this weekend. The proximity to houses bothers me and makes me wonder if I am wasting my time. Yesterday I could hear kids playing behind me (in the yard of the house behind the barn) and I could hear dogs barking behind me both on my right and left side.

Biggest deer I've ever seen in my life was during the rut a few years ago in my backyard. 3 days in a row. I live in a neighborhood. Those kids and dogs aren't making those tracks. :)

I like the NW corner of the pasture. The woods are behind the shot, the sun is at your back in the evening, and blocked by the trees during sunrise, and you're further from their trail, so your scent will dissipate some before reaching them, even if it is upwind. With moderate scent control and some brush knock-down (drag the tires or a log) you should be fine. Those deer are no doubt used to the (faint) scent of dogs and people. I'd drag some "spokes" from your stand through the deer path so you have clear line of sight at a few points. You don't have to go all the way to the stand, since you're looking down, just come back about a third or so of the distance across the field to make for clear shots with no brush between you and their armpits.

If there are good food sources, the neighborhoods/noise won't matter. Look for the natural stuff like oak trees as well as any farms/large gardens in the area. I live in a sparsely populated area, but you can still hear kids and dogs every day. On the flip side the hunting pressure is unbelievable because I am in an agricultural area. Still there are tons of deer, and they get pretty large for GA deer because of the abundance of food.
