Seriously, take the shot. Best case, you hit the bear and end the attack. Worst case you hit your buddy and end his pain of being eaten

Yes. There are other sources. According to them he threw the pistol while the bear was attaching him, not the guide.

Chubon says he was swung in the air by one bear. During the attack he attempted to throw a gun to Uptain but says the gun did not make it there. Chubon was dragged from his horse and attacked as Uptain shouted at the bears and tried to get their attention away from his client. That’s when one of the griz turned on Uptain to maul him, allowing Chubon to make a getaway on his horse where he headed for higher ground to make an emergency cell call.

According to another article he tried to shoot the bear before throwing the pistol to Uptain, but it di not go bang. That is why he tried to give it to his guide.

Another source even said that the handgun, was Uotain's Glock, left somewhere around, Clubon tried to used it but it did not work or was unloaded.
