I'm trying to figure out what the best SHTF rifle(s) would be. The question is for defensive, hunting / long range sniping which one or two would be your choices? I am thinking AK, AR-10, FNAR or M1A. I have an AR in .556 and a .22lr. I'm looking at something with a little more punch which has has lead me to the 7.62 caliber round but given the AK is not really built to be a long range weapon, I was thinking I would also need some sort of .308 in a non AK platform.

AK for 100 yards and less and .308 platform for longer range? Is this a proper assumption?

If 1 rifle would do both that would be great. I am a novice when it comes to rifles so I am looking for advice from experienced rifle owners. I want the durability / reliability of the AK but also the flexibility of the AR platform if that makes sense. The M1A Scout or FNAR would seem to be great options but I don't know if they are considered as reliable / durable as an AK.

I don't hunt often and I don't have any place to shoot long range near me so this is going to sit the majority of the time.

I am wanting to check this "need" off my list, so-to-speak.

Thanks for your input.

.22 LR and an AR .223/5.56. I can't see irons well anymore and flat top with optics makes a fine poodle shooter, for me, that is

Ok why else or why not a .308 caliber? Well you said only one or two, not three, but I'll have three so there. The third will be a .308 bolt gun at around 6 lbs. with a scope

The .22 LR with a suppressor is very quiet and will put meat on the table. Ammo should be easier to secure. Why an anemic poodle shooter? I'm not 20 anymore and I have to carry all my crap, weapons and ammo. A 35 lb. ruck with a basic load in the hills on my old ass will kick it without fail. Light is all right. Besides with optics and a good rest I can nail haji’s ass at 600 meters with .223/5.56. At 1000 meters I can put haji on the hunt for cover and might get lucky enough to wing someone.

Everyone wants it all until they have to hump it over the long haul. That gentlemen is when the trading begins.:p

I don't know about y'all, but an AR is about the last gun I'd want in a SHTF scenario. If I wanted something in 5.56, I'd make it a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle. But I'm with CCW on this one. AK and a 22. Preferably a 10/22.

No, not in SHTF. x51 is for sport shooting or removing targets at long distances. Neither of will be crucial in SHTF.

What distance is the AK effective to in your opinion Chris? I have 0 experience with AK's and am gleeming what little info I do know from reading. I like the AK platform but keep being told that is not enough rifle.
