If you could have 1 or 2 long guns if the SHTF which would they be and why?

What distance is the AK effective to in your opinion Chris? I have 0 experience with AK's and am gleeming what little info I do know from reading. I like the AK platform but keep being told that is not enough rifle.

Not enough rifle for what? An elephant? Even that's arguable.

To me, the AK is a very effective +/- 200 meter rifle all day. Remember, the boiler room doesn't need 2" groups and we are talking SHTF. IMO, the only thing the x51 offers over the x39 is more power, resulting in longer range. Nothing more.

It's hard to say, that's why it's good to always have plenty on hand. Just look at 5.56 right now. I remember buying my last case at $279, now it's $359+......if it's in stock.

Part of why I started this. I need to get a plan and then stock up on ammo.

OK, so if AK... then folder of some type or fixed stock? I can see the folder being useful in CQB.

To be clear. You are wanting a rifle to both defend yourself during a SHTF case, AND be able to use it to obtain food in the aftermath of the disaster (meaning maybe a 100 to 200 yard shot on game) And possibly take out threats from that distance as well.

Is this accurate ?

Exactly, and is this 1 rifle or 2?

I have a .22lr and a .556, looking at the 7.62 platform in AK or AR-10 (unless there is a better caliber / option). Is there a one size fits all or one that is close enough?

Based on your posting, I'd say you would get better value from the AK, especially when it comes to availability of ammo and parts.

Im also with CCW on the 22 and AK. My 22 is a Henry Survivor aka AR7. My thinking is in SHTF scopes are a liability. Rough living can break them or knock them out of zero. Lazers, red dots etc. all take batteries, which die. So for my thinking it's iron sights. Now my eyes also aren't up for "600 meters"(wow) so as far out as I can reasonably track a target, the AK47 can hit it, AND with some authority too. The 22 is for food. That takedown AR7 slips right into the BoB and 500 rounds drops in a small pouch as well.

Looking at some ballistics tables that show that the 5.56 drops about 55 inches at 500 yards. I think your scope will need to be side mounted otherwise it will be obstructed by the barrel. As for a thousand meters with an AR, while I'm not volunteering to try it, I think you could use 2-ply Charmin for body armor and be just fine. ;)

No, I think I'd better try to let them get closer before I go anouncing my presence with innefective small arms fire.

All in fun, not meaning to be raggin' on anyone and apologize if anyone takes it wrong.

Agree again. 7.62X39 punches pretty hard at 100 yards and costs TONS less that 5.56. I got a thousand rounds of steel case hollow points for about $190 shipped a few months back. 5.56 is harder to find in steel case and brass case is priceless. Or at least most manufacturers seem to think it is. Also, my AK eas up ANY ammo, whereas my AR chokes out on steel case.
