If you could have 1 or 2 long guns if the SHTF which would they be and why?

Another VERY good option would be 5.45x39 considering ammo is in the $130 per 1000 cost range. It is also a very suitable cartridge.

Let's face it guys. Very few of us on here are hardened, trained soldiers. A true SHTF scenario could be any number things. While it is possible, it is unlikely it will be the Russians/Chinese/Koreans marching down I-75. And, having a bit of an insider view, I seriously doubt you have to worry about our own military trying to disarm you. Our oath is to the Constitution and we are well aware of where our loyalties lie. I think it will more likely be a natural disaster, EMP, or some overall breakdown in government caused by our leaders inability to due just that...lead. In the majority of scenarios, your primary worries are going to be providing food and defending yourself from looters and roving bands of miscreants. I don't think there will be much need to engage targets, human or otherwise, out to 600-1000 yards. With that in mind, a .22 and an AK or SKS would be just fine. Another option that many people do not think about, but makes an outstanding survival/SHTF rifle is a good Marlin or Winchester 30-30. Just my .02.

I'm trying to figure out what the best SHTF rifle(s) would be. The question is for defensive, hunting / long range sniping which one or two would be your choices? I am thinking AK, AR-10, FNAR or M1A. I have an AR in .556 and a .22lr. I'm looking at something with a little more punch which has has lead me to the 7.62 caliber round but given the AK is not really built to be a long range weapon, I was thinking I would also need some sort of .308 in a non AK platform.

AK for 100 yards and less and .308 platform for longer range? Is this a proper assumption?

If 1 rifle would do both that would be great. I am a novice when it comes to rifles so I am looking for advice from experienced rifle owners. I want the durability / reliability of the AK but also the flexibility of the AR platform if that makes sense. The M1A Scout or FNAR would seem to be great options but I don't know if they are considered as reliable / durable as an AK.

I don't hunt often and I don't have any place to shoot long range near me so this is going to sit the majority of the time.

I am wanting to check this "need" off my list, so-to-speak.

Thanks for your input.
NO, you obviously need something to reach 200 yards....lol

You guys watch to many movies. Besides Obama is going to pawn the country out from underneath you giving phones out to welfare recipients and illegal aliens. What will you say to china when they come to collect "This is my land! Get off!!!" They will say "actually you pawned it to us and didn't make your payments." Zombies don't exist. People are way to pussified to actually do anything note worthy to affect anything. Even if the "SHTF" caused by things that don't exist most of you will be hiding in a hole watching your weapons rust because everyone wanted a black weapon or blued steel "tactical" weapon and forgot to buy oil and a cleaning kit. Don't forget fingernail polish for your primers. Rains a *****.

Lets see how many I piss off.
