People don't know what you're talking about. You could clarify. A young person without much income might only be able to afford one firearm. Is he more interested in self-defense or hunting? Or are we talking Walking Dead? Or is it if you could only keep one of your firearms, which would it be? In a realistic scenario, and you can only afford one firearm, a good answer is whatever you feel comfortable to carry. In an unrealistic scenario, there are different good answers.
 
Suppressed 10/22 takedown is the correct answer. Lightweight, compact, stupid quiet. Light ammo so you can easily carry a lot of it. Should handle anything you really need it to unless you are running into large 4 legged predators.

No such thing as one firearm for all situations….but Colt AR15/ M16 comes close.
Second would have to be a tie between a 6” model 57 or 29 and a Gold Cup.
