He was there when they got into some of the concentration camps and interrogated some of the guards and officers. This was just one of many "dark" things he was involved in. He survived the War, but not completely. He never quite got over it and I believe it's what eventually killed him. He created a very good life for himself and family after the war, but sank into severe alcoholism and lost everything, then died from it.
