Information on a s&w 17-4

Nice gun Tim...looks like you got some good info for the age...Id say $600ish for value...more if it had the original box.

Great user...lemme know if he wants to triple his original investment...;)

I already tried brother, he's ecstatic about the value. All these years he's been thinking it was a 200 dollar gun. Well maybe 30 years ago it was. Thanks

Around 1990, I saw an ad in The Atlanta Advetiser for a 1970s era Smith and Wesson model 17 with a 6 inch barrel the guy advertised it for $325 I offered 250. He offered to come down to 300; I came up to 275, and that's where it ended. I wouldn't pay $300 for a 22 revolver that I saw as just a big heavy plinker.

I ended up later, just a few years later, snagging a S&W model 34 kit gun, 4" for the same $300 that I wasn't willing to pay earlier.

(But The model 34, being a J frame gun, and light, is better for taking kids shooting and teaching women and beginners how to shoot a revolver. That 6 inch K framed gun was quite heavy.)

But if the revolver were only for my use I would prefer to have the K 17!
