Is Electricity Crucial To Our Survival? || The EMP

Yall want a good cheap faraday cage. A steel garbage can. I keep two way radios, HAM radio, batteries, rechargeable batteries, battery chargers, flashlights, and spare computers for my 7.3L diesel F-250 in garbage cans. I have 2 job site boxes also that holds a laptop for movie nights, 8 car batteries that were never filled with acid, solar cells, a small 400w wind turbine motor, a small honda inverter generator, a Pedal powered generator, 2 controllers and 50 CFL bulbs. I have a few carboys of acid to fill the car batteries. My house is septic, my well has a backup deep well hand pump. I heat my home with a wood cook stove, and enough of everything else. I'll be watching the two seasons of Jericho, Ray Mears bushcraft episodes, and family guy after an EMP hits.

As was mentioned before, an interesting read on the subject is "One Second After" by William Forstchen. It's a fictional 'what if' story that will at least force you to think a little on the subject.

The amount of fallout is largely determined on the burst type of the bomb, i.e. Surface, Sub Surface, Airburst, Multiple Burst etc. Sub Surface Burst Causing more long term fallout and radiation, and airburst being the most near term catastrophic for killing people and the most Gamma Radiation being thrown out. And plus, plume models from the CBRN JTF in NORTHCOM present where the most dangerous levels of fallout will occur.

Well, please explain to me how "electrons in the atmosphere" cause electric currents? And what exactly is a bio-mineral? ionization in the atmosphere from a nuclear explosion could disrupt radio waves, just like lightning strikes do. Fallout, or "black rain" as you like to call it, is just dust that got sucked up into a nuke mushroom cloud and has become mildly contaminated and falls like volcanic ash. There could be significant amounts of alpha and beta particles and even gamma radiation, but none of that causes emp's or destroys electronic components. As a physics teacher with a masters, and six years as an AF electronics tech specializing in radios, nav aids EW systems and microwave downlinks, i feel pretty confident in my assesment. I worked on U-2's We used to put sample gathering equipment in the q-bay and fly THROUGH mushroom clouds to gather samples. its how we knew the makeup of russian bombs. it certaintly didnt fry the electronics on the U-2. Also, half of europe was in the fallout zone when chernobyl caught fire. helicopters and tractors and trucks were driving and flying around in that for weeks putting the fires out and months later cleaning up. fallout just doesnt effect electronics the way youthink it does.

Bio-minerals. Really?

Fallout is highly charged radioactive dust comprised of matter that was vaporized in the nuclear blast and is considered highly dangerous. Water that was vaporized is also pulled up into the mushroom cloud and then fuses with other radio contaminants that became neutron charged before falling back to the earth as "black rain". This radioactive fallout would contaminate large amounts of land and drinking water causing mutations in human, plant, and animal life. Usually rain follows such an intense atmospheric catastrophe causing "rainouts" to occur, which spread radioactive pollutants and the byproduct of the deadly toxin iodine even more rapidly.

Bio-minerals is a term used to quantify the end result of Bio-mineralization (the process by which living organisms produce minerals). The roles of bio-minerals in organisms range from support to defense to feeding. As a result of the nuclear fallout the living organisms that produce minerals (including those needed for bone development, and precious metals) will die off and take years to grow back in such an unstable environment.

As far as electronics and Chernobyl are concerned... the fallout environment is much like that of battery acid. It may take time, but everything decays away. It is a very unstable environment to be in. The trucks and helos you mentioned did not have to stay in that sort of environment for a prolonged amount of time. I would take time to explain radiation in depth, but with your background it would seem that you are more than qualified to know exactly what I am talking about. Semiconductor devices are susceptible to beta and gamma radiation, alpha particles not so much. Now if the radiation is sufficient (which in the case of a worldwide nuclear catastrophe it would be) permanent damage would be created by large numbers of charges with sufficient energy and would change a transistors characteristics. Such high levels of radiation can also disrupt the crystal lattice and damage the transistors in that way. It is possible to make semiconductor devices that are resilient to radiation - at least for a period of time (eventually they would decay as well). There are numerous ways energetic particles and highly charged electrons can effect electronics. Now in the case of an isolated event such as Japan or Chernobyl, devices, humans, and equipment could be taken out of such an environment and "restored". In the case of world-wide fallout that would not be the case.

I am not as "accredited" as yourself so I say all of this humbly and with an open mind. Thank you sir for your service.

I wanted to have one of these giant underground penises installed in my backyard, but the association wasn't having it. :(

You know, a few years ago I may have harmlessly poked fun at you, but I'm actually a bit jealous. Pick up the Walking Dead series on DVD and I'd say you're all set. lol
