give out a serial number on a gun to a new member through PM before you arrange a meet so he/she can check number to make sure gun is not stolen? I can assure anyone it is not! im just wondering can they do anything with the number if theyre shady? I have no reason to think they are but he ask for the number and ive never had that happen...GO...

I mean, they prob could report it as stolen if they wanted to, but you not only have the PM inquiring about a firearm you have for sale & you prob have the receipt from your purchase to show that you're the original owner, if you in fact are the original owner. I would hope this person isn't foolish enough to file a false report with the PD...but, this is also the risk that we take as private owners and resellers of firearms, being that we dont know if a gun is stolen or not when we purchase it, unless we have it checked. I wouldnt worry too much

so you would give it to him if this was you?

I personally have not had anybody ever ask me for the serial number. I would give it to him or I would just have the gun checked myself and give him a copy of the report. Its hard to say bc like you, I try to deal with people with a decent amount of feedback and when you get a new member asking for something that rarely gets asked for, it makes your start wondering, why...

People are crazy these days and you just never know......
My resolution would be to offer to meet at the local PD and have the serial number checked there.

Sounds fishy to me.

The stories I've heard is that the police will only run the numbers on a gun they have in their possession.

Of course I read it on the internet so it must be true!

Honestly, there is no reason to do that. If you have the receipt (which you can show them) or a bill of sale or even your GWL. i would think that would be enough for most people. perhaps if it was a certain vintage (c&R) and they wanted to verify the manufacture date against what you told them. But i'd still be weary of someone asking for a serial number.
