Is it legal for a company to require me to surrender my GA DL to gain entry?

I like showing them my GA Carry Permit for ID. I did this in DC one time and they wouldn't accept it as valid ID>

I would refuse to leave my ID, you might tell them that your work requires that you DONT let your ID out of your control, or some other bull**** if you don't want them to have your ID.

I use to have a similar situation trying to enter Westinghouse Bettis. They would hassle me even though my government clearence was well above their need to know. Not only wouldnt let me in but hold, test equipment, diagnostic media were excluded. The director finally bought tools etc and i would wait for him to escort me everywhere, including the head. The government refused to relinquish my level of security as they didnt have the need to know.

Just get you one of those fancy State of Kalifornia Illegal Ali.......Opps.......I mean "Undocumented Dreamer Type People" Driver License.....problem solved......it's not like you actually need to provide any real information to get one anyway........problem solved.

I have heard that this is illegal since it is a form on bondage - any truth to that? Please provide opinions or specific references.

No. Not illegal. They have the right to request it in exchange for permission to enter private property, just like you have the right to refuse and GTFO. What they can't do is refuse to return it. That would be theft, and potentially unlawful detention or other legal headache.

I am an UPS system Field Engineer, so I work all over the place. Some of the buildings I go to require me to give them my GA Drivers License in order to get a badge and get access to the building. This really bothers me because I do not like handing my personal info over and hoping the security guard is honest. I have also been handed the wrong ID back several times.

I would think it would fall under private property rights. As in "if you want to come on my property, here are the terms". If you don't like the terms, don't enter the property. I realize you are there for work but I'm commenting on the legality part. If you have a compelling reason (compelling to them as some have already given examples in this thread) you can probably negotiate on the terms.
