Is the 7mm-08 falling out of favor?

The 6.5 Creedmoor has probably taken away more potential 7mm-08 owners than anything.

The marketing on the Creedmoor got everyone thinking that it's the best thing out to 1k yards. It could be a Ruger American or Savage Axis and people will think it's a 1k yard rifle because of that cartridge.

7mm-08 is just old news, kinda like my 338 Fed.

It's the ballistic twin of the 7 X 57 Mauser, which has been killing big game, including elephants, for something like 120 years.

Ammo is cheaper, worldwide it's more accessible, - what's to get excited about the 7mm-08? The action is 1/4 inch shorter?

Arms manufacturers would have been smarter, and spent less money to introduce more rifles in the "old fashioned" 7 x 57.

The problem with that logic is that most commercial rifle makers only make two sizes of action; Long Action or Short Action. The original 7X57 Mausers had an "intermediate" action. Therefore, in order to chamber their rifles in 7X57, the current makers would have to put them into Long Actions. Then you have wasted space, excess weight and have to have a different magazine as well. Much better to have a 308 based cartridge.

As far as why 7mm-08s are not as available anymore has been somewhat explained above. The other reason is that they get snapped up pretty quickly when they are put on the shelves.

More and more serious long range shooters are chambering their rifles for 7-08 or 7-08AI. With today's bullets, there isn't that much difference between the 6mm, 6.5mm, and 7mm, and the heavier 7mm bullets are creeping up on the 30 cal bullets as well.

The difference in weight is negligible. On the order of 4 oz. The 7 x 57 will feed through any magazine that will feed a .30-06 (which is based on the 7 x 57). Not sure what "wasted space" means in the context of caliber selection.

The point is that world wide, despite all the supposed disadvantages you have listed for the 7 X 57, there are magnitudes more modern sporting rifles sold in that caliber than 7mm-08.

I love my 7x57. Never going to part with it.
