Is this carbine worth purchasing?

An elderly neighbor of mine (he is 93!!)who I help from time to time wants to sell me this M1 carbine as he knows I have firearms (really handguns). Not knowing anything about and really not needing I do want to help him. He is wanting $400 for it, should I get it? If It looks to be in great shape but the magazine has some rust on it, If I do get it not sure what I will do with it, maybe toss it into my safe for future use? is it worth the investment for the future? He took it apart for me and showed me that all of the parts say Rock Ola or have similar type markings like R or KR, etc.
