I am wondering if a particular event that has happened more than once around my house is "normal" or "never heard of such a thing before"?

A pack of beagles will come through the woods, including my yard and through the neighborhood streets and run between houses.

They are sniffing out rabbits.

Then a guy comes running through with a machete and chops the rabbits.

He leaves the rabbits chopped in the yard or where ever he encounters them. But I have found them chopped in the lawn at times.

Is this some sort of "traditional" southern sport or is there a real hunting season for this or is this guy just out of his mind?

I am guessing that this is done on farms to protect crops or something or some similar reason but I find it a bit much in a modern neighborhood setting. The houses were built where a farm used to be and the guy is on foot so he is local but is he not smart enough to figure it is not a farm field anymore?

Happened Friday night. This is the first time I have seen it happen at night. Usually 2 guys on a random weekend day although usually only one has the machete, other guy just seems to be following along. I have seen it 3 or 4 times in the past couple of years. Same guys, dogs, method. Leave the chopped rabbit behind.

Was there a great rabbit infestation in the past where this guy learned this or what?

Your thoughts?

You sound serious. So I won't insult you by asking if you're just leading us on.
I've never heard of such a thing and it sounds pretty crazy to me.

The one time I went rabbit hunting the rabbit was running even when the dogs weren't close.
I'm guessing you're saying the beagles actually catch the rabbit for the guy and then he chops it.

That's some weird stuff right there!

I have not been able to see the dog interaction with the rabbit. But the dogs do seem to be spotters or maybe they locate the holes. Buy the time the guy with the machete runs on by I am well into WTF mode and wondering what I have just seen. It has happened several times now so it is not a fluke. The guy certainly does not look like the type that wants to stop and have a chat over some coffee to have a discussion about property lines and machete safety.

Other times I just get home and find a rabbit chopped in the yard. When I first moved in I thought a dog in the hood had just chewed one up until I saw the rest of the rabbit drive.

The night ops is a new twist. After being robbed twice I am not happy seeing flashlights running through the back yard.

Yes this is a traditional Southern Sport. There are actually contest for this sort of thing. They are called Tall Tale competitions.
