Muzzle boresighting devices work better because they are where the barrel makes it last inputs on the flight of the bullet. A high quality MBD will give you an accurate zero. Cartridge case ones are easier to use because you just chamber them and start fiddling with the sights.

Unless it's a rifle that there is no way you can see down the bore like a several of the lever actions then I just pull the bolt or in tha case of an AR break it open and pull the bolt carrier group look down the bore and center it up on the target, then without moving the rifle move the crosshairs to the target and you're bore sighted.

I have a chamber based bore sight. works great an I've used it in quite a few rifles (AR platform, levers, pumps, single shots). Nice to confirm or at least check zero before season. nice thing is it doesn't matter what's on the front of the rifle and its more of a custom fit for the calibers. good investment as I've been swapping optics around a lot recently.

I have chamber style, muzzle style laser and muzzle style graph. I like the graph better because once you get it bore sighted and then fine tuned by actual live fire, you can re-insert the graph style and document where it is in the graph. If you ever need to check to see if its dead on and cant live fire, just insert the graph style and check your DOPE
