Item Description: Up for sale is one rare Springfield Navy M1 Garand, Mark 2 Model 1 in 7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester). It has a 7.62x51mm barrel, which was designated Mark 2 Model 1 by the Navy. The Navy produced these rifles by re-barreling and rebuilding original M1 Garands. The earlier versions had a .30-06 barrel with a "7.62 Sleeve" that converted it to 7.62. This is one of the most difficult to find variations of the Garand as only 5,000 were manufactured in 1965 to 1966. This one was converted by contract by AMF, which only had about 10-15% of the contract, with the bulk being done by H&R (Harrington & Richardson). This rifle comes with a CMP certificate authenticating it as a Navy Mod 1, and has a mirror bore with sharp rifling, muzzle wear of 1 and minimal throat erosion of 1, which is about as good as it gets. The barrel is like new with a perfect crown and bright chamber in the âwhiteâ. (some of the Navy barrels will have VERY poor throats). The receiver on this one is SN 3.430,xxx and was manufactured in January 1945 by the Springfield Armory. It has all Springfield parts and headspaces perfectly with NATO 7.62 headspace gauges on a very nice WWII -19SA bolt. Overall the gun is in excellent condition with original parkerizing on the receiver and all parts and sharp proofs on the barrel as shown.
The rifle was originally assembled by AMF in the 1965 or 1966. The 7.62x51mm barrel was manufactured by Springfield Armory in 8/65 and has the correct revision number SA 11010457 SPL and Department of Defense stamp. The stock that is on it now is an an attractive USGI of what I believe is WWII vintage, with closely matching USGI hand guards. The stock has no cracks and has tight lockup. There are some dents, bruises, and one small fill area on the bottom area under the barrel. If you prefer new wood, I can upgrade to the very attractive new stock shown in the photos for an minor $50 up charge. I personally refinished the stock using techniques to closely match the USGI look with the reddish color to it.
The rile will come with CMP certificate of authenticity, showing that it is an original Navy Mod 1 barreled receiver and not a receiver that has merely had a 7.62 barrel placed on it later. I personally built this rifle from a CMP barreled receiver using original USGI parts, gauged the rifle for 7.62 headspace, and test fired it at the range. The rifle cycled and fired flawlessly using 7.62 MILSURP ammo. This rifle will include the white plastic insert (as used by the Navy) to prevent accidental loading of .30-06 rounds. I will also include a hard case and two en-bloc clips.
Thanks for looking. Please contact me through a private message with any further questions. I am enclosing a link to Flikr with more photos. http://www.flickr.com/photos/87237902@N07/sets/72157634937643688/
Note that I am an experienced retired Army senior non-commissioned with many years of experience with rifles and weapon systems, so have no worries of the build out of this Garand. I will offer an inspection and will provide all gauging tools to do a thorough look.
