If it's just for home defense, why saddle her with the inherent disadvantage of a handgun?

Get her a light weight AR. Low recoil, high capacity, more energy than a 44 Mag and MUCH easier to make good hits with than any handgun. And no, you do not need to worry about over penetration. Tests have shown that FMJs will tumble on impact and actually penetrant interior walls less than a 9mm will.

Yeah, a S&W air weight, .38 spl, hammerless would be a good start. Some come with lasers, easy to operate, dependable. Around 400-500 new.

The OP said he wanted something that was "low recoil" and easy to handle.
The long, heavy double-action trigger pull of the gun you are suggesting makes it NOT easy to handle, if "handle" means to shoot, even in dry-fire practice.
Small .38 snubby revolvers have terrible sights, although the laser will solve this problem if (and only if) the new shooter's hands are a good fit to where the laser activation button is located. I have three J-frame Smiths with Crimson Trace Lasergrips, and some people's hands and fingers just can't find that button. They miss it half the time, even after dozens of tries.

Finally, no .38 special revolver that has a 1.8" barrel and only weighs 14-16 oz. will EVER be a "low recoil" gun. They all have serious recoil and muzzle flip-up.

As observed by the US Supreme Court, handguns have inherent advantages over a long gun when it comes to home defense. They can be used one-handed, which leaves the other hand free to use the phone to call 911, lock and deadbolt a door, push an innocent person out of harm's way, or block an incoming punch or stab by the bad guy.
Not everything is about stopping power and foot/lbs. of kinetic energy on target.

All of those things can be accomplished with a light weight long gun with minimal training and thought.
