Item is for: Sale Only
Sale Price: $400 OBO
Caliber: 8mm (7.92 x 57) German
Willing to Ship: No
Bill of Sale Required?: No
Item Description: I'm helping an elderly fellow sell some of his collection and about all that's left is this old Mauser.
This rifle started, and mostly still remains, as a 1911 Erfurt built Kar98 (the lighter, shorter, Gew98). Most parts have the original 4 digit SN or the last two digits "18". However, the floor plate and follower have a different two digit code (these bear a "10"), as does the rear collar of the bolt and safety lever (these bear a "55"). The extractor bears a "99".
The firing pin itself does have an "18". As does the front sight, but plate, bolt release, rear of bolt, bolt handle, trigger, magazine well / action, and butt plate.
The lock screw for the rear of the action is not an original.
The stock is the original (correct SN) but was "sporterized" years ago. The front is cut back, the sling hole epoxied, and a rubber cap screwed onto the bottom of the grip.
The butt plate still bears the unit markings:
" 10. A.F.
1.1.H.139."
Which, I believe, stood for rifle inventory #139, of the 1st Battery of the 1st Battalion of the 10th Regiment of Foot Artillery.
(My research has found one reference,
http://ycgg.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/kar98_long_version.pdf ,
that states that original firing pin in a different bolt is not that uncommon for WW1 rebuilds.)
Barrel Length with a dowel from bolt face to muzzle is 23 & 3/4" or about 60cm.
From end of receiver to muzzle is 22 & 3/4" or about 58cm. The Kar98a should have a 600mm (60cm) barrel).
I've got photos of all the parts and pieces if you want something specific.
Lands are bright, grooves are dark. Very sweet and easy shooter. I have about 5-8 rounds of PMC 170gr rounds.
Thanks to all the ODT members who have sent me information re: this rifle. I appreciate any help describing it.
Caveat: I often work on-call and I have to remain within a 25 minute drive to Toccoa when I am on call. If I can meet you, I will, driving as far as Gainesville or Bass Pro. If I'm on call we'll have to work it out for another day, but I am flexible.
