Jupiter's retrograde (the perceived backwards track) is pretty common. It happens anytime Earth passes a planet, it is just an optical illusion as we "lap" the other planet. Jupiter's orbit around the sun is slower than our 365 day year, so we complete the lap roughly every year and a half.
