If you lose a knife, can use it to cut tree limbs to build a shelter, cut fence, break locks., start fire with ferro rod, a weapon...shall I continue?

I wasn't trying to challenge your response, as stated, I am learning this process myself and am open to ideas.
I see the bolt cutters as something primarily used to cut a fence or lock (that seemed to be Teti's purpose too, because he said "just in case a need to gain entry.") So, that would be the best item for that purpose, but it seems kind of heavy if it doesn't serve other purposes as well.
It seems that he had various items already to accomplish most of those other tasks that you listed (hacksaw and multitool in the 2nd pouch/pocket of the bag for the limbs and ferro rod, for example).

He may believes in redundancy? Granted its heavy but if there was no other way to do something with the materials at hand... Would you not want the little extra weight? Oh, there also maybe a window..lol



I approach this from a ultralight backpacking standpoint. So maybe bolt cutters are out for me. But definately in my idea bag.

This is just my opinion, but I'd wager that the bolt cutters are a carryover from military operations, as SEALs carry them to "gain entry". In a BOB situation, if you're in an urban area, they'd have a role that made them worth the weight (along with a lock picking set), but for rural/forest areas, you would likely be able to climb over, around or under anything that may require bolt cutters. I see it like this- a bolt cutter is for chains on gates. That's front/back door entry. If there's a chain on the gate, there is likely a fence, and those can be cut with lesser items, like a bayonet or multitool.

I have these in my bag. I can definitely see the need to be able to get through a fence in a hurry when travelling overland. Don't see the need for bolt cutters though if I have these.

I have these in my bag. I can definitely see the need to be able to get through a fence in a hurry when travelling overland. Don't see the need for bolt cutters though if I have these.

I have been getting more and more curious about "prepping" as most would call it and survival, so I checked out this vid. Thanks for posting, btw. Here's one of the first questions that popped into my head: How much money goes into a bag like this?

He has a pretty well-stacked bag, so it wasn't cheap. However, a person can put a beginner car/truck bag together for under $100 at Wal-Mart. Make a list with what you may need to get you home if you were within 50 miles of your house and driving was impossible. Start with an inexpensive pack (under $20) from the outdoors section and go through the other items on the list. People find that most will be under $5.

I always keep in mind that a go bag is about preparedness for anything, not just TEOTWAWKI/SHTF scenarios. Frequently I use items from my go bag when traveling or out in the field (e.g., first aid kit, munchies, tools).

^ You might also find a decent bag at a military surplus store or Goodwill/Salvation Army type store on the cheap.
