In John Wick I, John wants to leave his life of assassinations employment to enjoy life with his wife Helen. He goes to Russian boss Viggo and tells him. Viggo gives John "an impossible task" that John completes successfully and he leaves. In John Wick II, Santino D'Antonio visits retired John at his home and tells him he [John] must honor a marker he [Santino] had against John and reminds John that he [Santino] had that marker because he [Santino] was the person who got John out of the assassinations employment. What did I miss ? John only left once. Was it Viggo [without a marker ?] or Santino with a marker ? Thanks.

OP a good question as I watched part of John Wick (one) yesterday on the plane (again.)
Santino's Sister was hot for her age!
Viggo made no mention of a marker owed. If he had one, he would have traded it for his son’s life, is my guess. Suspect Wick “bought” permission from Santino with a marker to do Viggos bidding. Perhaps it is what put (or kept) Santino at the table, but that’s also a guess.
