As a kid, I always heard that seeing a fox out in the open during broad daylight often means that it has rabies. May be an old wive's tale. I don't know.

that is a ole wise tale when foxes have pups they stay busy hunting for food to feed them> could be denning close to humans trying avoid the yotes which will kill foxes. I rather have the foxes than yotes> foxes don,t kill deer fawns coyotos do
